Eighteenth and Nineteenth British and French Academic painting; Gender and Orientalism; Darwinian theory in film and painting; Australian Pastoralisms; Australian Indigenous art; Gendering of Modernism in Australian art; Portraiture; Europe’s Civilising Mission in film.

Prof. Hoorn is an expert in the area of British and French colonial cultures in Australia, the Pacific and Africa.

Outputs: Professor Hoorn is currently working on ARC funded research investigating the representation of the emotions in paintings about animals with Barbara Creed and Deirdre Coleman. Her latest book, Hilda Rix and Elsie Rix’s Moroccan Idyll: Art and Orientalism appeared with the Miegunyah imprint of Melbourne University Press in December 2012.
